Minos Moka Pot Espresso Maker Review and Tutorial

Minos Moka Pot Espresso Maker Review and Tutorial

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to make stovetop espresso with the Minos Moka Pot Espresso Maker. The Minos is a beautiful coffee maker. The Minos is made from a heavy stainless steel with a Mirror finish and not polished aluminium, which Bialetti uses. The brewer ships with three different colored handles (yellow, light blue, red) so you can customize the Moka Pot to match your kitchen. For this tutorial, I will be brewing coffee using the 3-Cup model of the Minos Moka Pot. There is also a 6-Cup Model. The 3-Cup model makes 5 ounces of stovetop espresso, whereas the the 6-cup model makes double that at 10-ounces. The…Continue Reading

All Things Coffee At The New Isso é Café In São Paulo

All Things Coffee At The New Isso é Café In São Paulo

If you ever visit SĂŁo Paulo, Beco do Batman—which translates to Batman’s Alley—is a must. The alley has had its name since a graffiti artist portrayed that character on one of the walls in the 1980s. Today, a variety of graffiti artists illustrate the walls—think of the Wynwood walls but instead of an industrial, flat area of Miami, imagine a bunch of walls condensed in a curvy alley located in a hilly, artsy neighborhood of SĂŁo Paulo. In one of the alley’s entrances, Isso Ă© CafĂ© just opened its second coffee shop in the city. The story of Isso Ă© CafĂ© is best started with the story of Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza, also known as FAF. Silvia …Continue Reading

Orange is the New Black – Function Coffee Labs

Orange is the New Black – Function Coffee Labs

There was a time a decade or so ago when I considered citrus to be an anathema to coffee. I felt that the two did not mix, like teenage mosh pits and acupuncture. But then about the time I started this blog, I became acquainted with coffees possessing natural citrus flavors, and slowly I understood that citrus not only had a place at the coffee table, but it deserved a seat of honor.Read more »Continue Reading

Espresso Tamping Visual Tutorial

If you wish to consistently make great espresso, you will need to have an excellent tamp. This visual tutorial will serve as an initial guide to get you started. Follow the steps below and practice. With practice, your espresso shots will get better and better. Excellent form and consistency is your goal. Let’s get started. You will need ground espresso, a tamper, and a portafilter. Video: Alex Jones Goes To Seattle, Gets Attacked With Coffee

I must admit, I have a bit of a soft spot for unhinged conspiracy theorist extraordinaire Alex Jones. Back before he was a nationally recognizable edgeless face or had the ear of the equally-edgeless president, Jones was a lovable looney on Austin’s Public Access television, one that I would regularly watch late at night instead of studying for exams or writing papers. Sure, he was still had some pretty out-there theories, but they all made sense within the context of “Keeping Austin Weird;” Jones was even has a cameo in Richard Linklater’s Waking Life, perhaps the most hippy-dippy Austin movie ever made. Jones has changed quite a bit since those salad day, but even within the context of my own collegial nostalgia, …Continue Reading

AnZa: Brutalist Sculpture Meets Espresso

AnZa: Brutalist Sculpture Meets Espresso

This is the AnZa, a home espresso machine from the minds at Montaag—a multi-disciplinary design firm that keep offices in both Norway and Berkeley, California. The team here has worked on a dramatic range of projects, from consumer tech devices and HiFi speakers to cafe interiors and futuristic ocean vessels. They also love coffee. And like most designers who love coffee, they eventually turn their interest and their talents to create the coffee device of their dreams. In this case, the result is an experiment in textures and materials that you don’t often see used for kitchen appliances. The AnZa takes a shot at the traditional vernacular of espresso machine aesthetics, while still remaining functional. It looks like it…Continue Reading

AeroPress Coffee Maker Tutorial

AeroPress Coffee Maker Tutorial

The Aerobie AeroPress is a single cup coffee brewing system that will provide excellent use when traveling or even as your solution for quality office coffee. The system is priced between $25 and $30 which I find reasonable. In addition to the core brewing system, you will get 350 AeroPress filters and a holder for them. The device shares similarities with several other coffee brewing methods. It uses a plunger to force water through coffee, which will be familiar to French press users. The pressurization that occurs in the plunging action is similar to an espresso machine. That said, let me be clear: this is neither an espresso machine…Continue Reading

In a city like Hamilton, Ontario, though, the locals would rather you didn’t judge them entirely on their 80-plus outlets of the ubiquitous Canadian coffee chain, Tim Horton’s. Since 2011, Hamilton has earned a spot on many people’s radar for its affordable rents and developing neighborhoods. So much so that Canadian media outlet CBC asked if Hamilton was turning into the next Brooklyn…Continue Reading
